Cyberware is a core part of Cyberpunk 2077. Ripperdocs install it, and Update 2.0 (September 2023) redesigned the whole system. This guide covers the basics in plain words, without story spoilers.

Key takeaways

  • Ripperdocs install and upgrade cyberware. Wikipedia notes that implants unlock abilities such as double jumping and sliding.
  • Since Update 2.0, cyberware gives armor. Clothing is no longer the main source.
  • Your body can only handle a limited number of implants (capacity), and Technical Ability perks help with that.
  • Implants are tied to attributes, so their bonuses grow as that attribute grows.

What changed in Update 2.0

GGRecon's summary of Update 2.0 lists a cyberware redesign and armor coming from cyberware. Pro Game Guides adds more detail. There is a cap on how many implants you can run. You can go past it, which matters for netrunner builds. Some body parts can gain extra slots with the Licence to Chrome perk. New cyberware types and variants were added too.

How the system works

PartWhat it means
RipperdocBuy, install and upgrade implants on the shop screen.
CapacityA limit on how much chrome your body can handle.
ArmorComes from dedicated implants such as Subdermal armor.
AttributesEach implant is linked to one, and its bonus scales with it.

Popular implants

RPG Site's Update 2.0 builds guide names several implants:

  • Cyberdeck and Optical Camo for stealth hackers.
  • Sandevistan, Gorilla Arms or Projectile Launch System for close-range bruisers.
  • Mantis Blades for fast melee.
  • Kiroshi optics in several variants.

The same guide says Technical Ability perks make equipped cyberware stronger, raise capacity and let you install past the cap. Intelligence perks improve the Monowire. Reflexes perks help with blades. Cool perks improve Optical Camo.

Tips for new players

  1. Pick your playstyle first, then choose implants that match it.
  2. Check the attribute linked to an implant before buying.
  3. Watch your capacity before you stack upgrades.
  4. Do not worry about mistakes. Perks can be refunded.

Phantom Liberty note

The expansion adds the Relic tree. RPG Site says Relic perks can boost certain cyberware, but calls them nice to have, not essential.
