RDR 2

RedM roleplay rules are the shared agreements that keep a Wild West story fair: do not kill without a reason, do not use information your character could not know, and treat danger like a real person would. Every server writes its own rules, so your server's rules always beat any general guide. This page explains the common terms with Western examples, so the rules page on your first server makes sense.

Key takeaways

  • Stay in character and respect the people behind the characters.
  • Do not use information your character could not know.
  • Value your character's life. Fear is part of the story.
  • Read the server rules and Discord first. If unsure, ask staff before you try something big.

The common terms

These words appear on most rule pages for RedM and FiveM. Exact definitions differ by server, but the ideas are the same.

In character and out of character

In character (IC) is what your cowboy says and does. Out of character (OOC) is you, the player. Keep the two apart. Use the server's OOC chat or Discord for real-life talk, and never insult a real person in the name of a story. Many servers also ask you to mark OOC text clearly, for example with a short tag, so nobody mistakes it for a character speaking.

Value your life and use fear

The Old West is dangerous. If three armed riders stop you on the trail, your character would be afraid. Fear RP and value of life rules ask you to act that way. Put your hands up, follow reasonable demands, and do not pull a gun in a hopeless fight just to win a scoreboard. This is what makes robberies, standoffs and chases feel exciting for both sides. It is also why many servers set limits on how often you can start such scenes.

Knowledge your character should not have

Metagaming breaks the story. Your character does not know about a plan you read in Discord, a face you saw on a livestream, or the name on a stranger's tag unless it was told to them in the game. After a death, the new life rule means you forget how you died and who did it. You can report rule breaks to staff, but you cannot use that knowledge in character.

Be a good partner in the story

  • Give others a chance to respond. Roleplay is shared.
  • Do not harass anyone. Stories should not hurt real people.
  • Do not use bugs or exploits. Report them to staff.
  • Do not force actions on someone. Describe what you try, and let them react.
  • If a scene gets too intense, ask politely to step out of it.

What happens if you break a rule

Penalties are set by each server. They often start with a warning, then a kick, a temporary ban, and a permanent ban for serious or repeat problems. Servers can also remove a whitelist spot. If you get a punishment you think is unfair, use the appeal process on the Discord, stay calm and give a clear account of what happened. Our rules and bans explainer covers the same ideas for GTA RP.

An example scene, step by step

Imagine your character is walking out of a general store when two riders stop in front of you and demand your money. A good response: stop, show fear, and say something in character. You might hand over a small amount and hope they leave. A poor response: pull a gun at once and shoot, then talk about it in OOC chat. The first keeps the scene going and gives the other players a story. The second ends it fast, may break the value of life rule, and may get you reported.

Afterwards, do not use what you learned in character. If a friend asks you on Discord who robbed you, your character cannot name them unless they saw a face, a name or a distinctive horse. Report real rule breaks through the proper staff channel instead.

A short checklist before you ride in

  1. Read the full rules page and any lore or economy notes.
  2. Join the Discord and look for a new-player channel.
  3. Write a short, simple backstory.
  4. Check voice rules and whether a working microphone is required.
  5. Start with low-risk jobs while you learn the local customs.

For parents

RDR2 is a mature game, and servers allow violence in character. Check each server's age rules and moderation. Voice chat means players may talk to strangers, so talk with younger players about safe behavior online.

FAQ

What is RDM?

Random death match: killing another player without a story reason. It breaks the rules on almost every server.

What is metagaming?

Using information your character could not know, such as something learned from Discord or a stream. It is not allowed on most servers.

What is FailRP?

Acting in a way that does not fit the setting or the situation, which breaks immersion for others.

What is the new life rule?

After your character dies, you forget what led to it and do not seek revenge using that knowledge. Servers word it differently, so read yours.

Do all servers use the same rules?

No. Each server writes its own rules, so always read them before you play.
