Hunting in Red Dead Redemption 2 pays off when you match your weapon to the animal and aim for a clean kill. A bad shot ruins the pelt and cuts its value. This guide explains the star rating system, which weapons suit which animals, what to do with the carcass, and how hunting connects to crafting and camp. It avoids story spoilers.
Key takeaways
- Animals have a quality rating of up to three stars. Only a three-star animal can give a perfect pelt.
- Use the right weapon and ammo for the animal size, and avoid explosive ammo.
- Carried carcasses fill your horse quickly. Sell or use them often.
- Camp, the trapper and crafting turn your hunt into upgrades.
How hunting works
Track an animal, approach slowly and shoot cleanly. Use binoculars first. They show the animal's quality, and they tell you which weapon and ammo give the best pelt. A normal hit usually damages the pelt. A critical or fatal hit does better, and that is where Dead Eye helps: at higher Dead Eye ranks, it shows weak points on animals. A fatal hit kills at once, while a critical hit can leave the animal running, so you may need to track it.

Weapon and ammo by animal size
One community guide (Fandom) sorts animals into size groups. Use it as a rule of thumb, and let the binocular tip override it in the game.
| Size | Examples | Suitable choice |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Songbirds, snakes, toads | Small game arrows |
| Moderate | Rabbits, raccoons, badgers | Varmint rifle |
| Medium | Foxes, coyotes, pigs, beavers | Bow, throwing knives, repeaters, rifles |
| Large | Deer, wolves, boars | Bow, rifles, sniper rifles |
| Massive | Bears, bison, moose, elk | Improved arrows, rifles, sniper rifles, slug shells |
Avoid explosive ammo, because it destroys pelts. Pistols and revolvers are generally poor for good pelts, so keep a rifle on your saddle for the trail. Lassoing an animal from horseback and then finishing it on foot also causes little pelt damage, according to the same guide.
Skin it or carry it
You can skin an animal on the spot or carry the whole carcass. Skinning is fast and safe, and it gives you the pelt and some meat. Carrying keeps the full animal for sale, but carcasses spoil over time, and predators may follow the smell. Skins, pelts and hides also fill your horse's rear storage quickly, so you cannot carry everything. Plan trips so you sell regularly.
| Choice | Good for | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Skin on the spot | Quick profit and food | You take only part of the animal |
| Carry carcass | Full value when fresh | Rots and draws predators |
Prepare before you hunt
Good hunting starts in town. Buy the ammunition that suits your target animals, clean your weapon, and bring food for your own cores. Keep some space in your horse storage. If you ride a calm, bonded horse, it will not panic when you shoot near it, and you can leave it close while you track. Move upwind when you can, because animals smell you before they see you. Crouch or walk slowly as you get close, and stop moving when an animal looks up.
Selling and the trapper
General stores and butchers buy carcasses and parts. The trapper buys perfect pelts, and also crafts clothing and gear upgrades from them. The fence can make trinkets and talismans from trophies. Do not sell every pelt blindly. Check what the trapper can make first, since some upgrades improve your satchel, your weapons or your cores.
Legendary animals
Legendary animals are special hunts you find by following clues. You often track them in steps, then they appear near your location. Their pelts are always legendary, no matter which weapon you use. If the game says there is too much activity to find clues, camping and sleeping or finishing a side activity can help. Some legendary hunts need a hunting level before they appear.
Why hunting helps early
Early in the game you rarely have spare cash. Hunting turns time into money without needing a mission. A few animals give you meat to cook, pelts to sell, and parts for crafting. It also trains your cores: the game rewards hunting, crafting and collecting with experience that can raise your Dead Eye capacity over time. Treat it as a relaxed way to learn the map, since each region has different wildlife.
Crafting
Materials from hunting and gathering can become ammunition, tonics, trinkets and satchel upgrades once you learn recipes or reach the right vendor. Poison and improved arrows need flight feathers and plants. Check shop and catalog menus for what is available. Keep a few spare materials in case a recipe needs them soon.
Camp upgrades
Camp is a home base where you rest, cook, change outfits and talk with other characters. Your group keeps supplies there, and bringing meat and pelts helps the camp. Contributions to the camp are optional and cost money, so balance them with your own needs. Use our money guide to plan.
A simple hunting routine
- Stock ammunition and food in town, and clean your weapon.
- Ride out and use binoculars to pick a good animal.
- Use the right weapon and shoot for a clean kill.
- Skin or carry, then sell, craft or cook.
- Return to camp, cook and rest to save.
Common mistakes
- Using explosive or the wrong ammo on a three-star animal.
- Stacking carcasses until your horse is full and nothing else fits.
- Ignoring predators that smell your kill.
- Selling a perfect pelt that the trapper could turn into an upgrade.
