The level-up screen in Elden Ring can look confusing. There are eight attributes, and each one does something different. This guide explains them in plain words, using the Elden Ring Wiki. We do not give exact soft-cap numbers, because they are easy to get wrong.

Key takeaways

  • Vigor raises your health. It helps every build.
  • Endurance raises stamina and equip load.
  • Your weapon decides which damage stat to raise.
  • Gains slow down at higher values, so spread points wisely.

How leveling works

Runes are both money and experience. You spend them at a site of grace to raise one stat by one point. Each level costs more than the last. The wiki table shows level 1 needing 673 runes and level 10 needing 829. So early levels are cheap, and later ones add up fast.

Equip load and rolling

Equip load is how much gear you can carry. The wiki says rolling changes with the share of your limit you use:

  • Under 30 percent: the longest rolls.
  • 30 to 70 percent: normal rolls with the same safety.
  • Over 70 percent: slow recovery, so you get hit more.
  • Over 100 percent: you cannot roll.

Endurance raises your limit, so heavy armor needs it.

What is scaling?

Each weapon gets extra damage from certain stats. That is its scaling. A weapon with strength scaling gets stronger as you raise strength. Look at the weapon page to see which stats matter. Weapons also have minimum stat needs.

A simple plan

  1. Spend your first few levels on vigor.
  2. Pick one damage stat that matches your weapon.
  3. Add endurance when you feel stamina or weight limits.
  4. Add mind only if you use spells or many skills.

Choose a weapon in our early weapons guide, or compare origins in the starting classes guide.
