Trouble in Terrorist Town, or TTT, is a social deduction game in Garry's Mod. A few hidden traitors try to kill everyone else, and the innocents must work out who the traitors are before it is too late. Start by playing the built-in tutorial on F1, join a server with a lot of players and play as an innocent for a few rounds.
Key takeaways
- Traitors win by killing all innocents. Innocents win by killing all traitors or by surviving until the time runs out.
- Detectives can search bodies and share what they learn.
- Do not shoot people only because they act oddly. Teamkills cost points and Karma.
- Rules differ per server. Read them before the first round.
- Find populated servers in the Garry's Mod server list.
How a TTT round works
TTT comes from the game mode's own help pages. Each round has three stages.
- Preparing. Everyone spawns and grabs weapons from the map. Nobody knows their role.
- Active. Roles are set. Traitors learn who they are, and the timer starts.
- Complete. A short win screen shows, and a new round begins.
Deaths are not announced at once. You must find a body and search it (the default key is E) to confirm who it was and how they died.

The roles
| Role | Goal | Special tools |
|---|---|---|
| Innocent | Kill all traitors or survive until time runs out | Basic weapons from the map |
| Traitor | Kill all innocents | Equipment menu (C key) and private voice chat |
| Detective | Same as innocent, with more information | Equipment menu, body searches shared with everyone |
The traitor share is set by the server. There is always at least one. Detectives only appear if enough players are in the round.
Innocent tips
- Stay in groups, but not in a tight line. Traitors rarely attack when two or three people watch.
- Search bodies. The body tells you the cause of death and gives clues.
- Report what you saw clearly. "Red was alone with the body" helps more than "he is sus".
- Do not shoot on suspicion alone. One wrong shot kills a friend and costs Karma. Wait for proof, such as someone shooting a person, or a weapon only traitors have.
- Protect detectives. Traitors target them first.
Traitor tips
- Be patient. Do not kill in view of a crowd.
- Use the equipment menu. Credits come from kills, and you can only carry one special weapon at a time.
- Talk like an innocent. Lying is part of the game, but stay within server rules.
- Coordinate with partners. Traitor voice chat is private (the sprint key on the default setup).
- Watch the clock. Many servers use a haste timer that starts short and grows with every death.
Karma explained
Everyone begins at 1000 Karma. Hurting teammates lowers it, and Karma recovers between rounds. Low Karma makes you deal less damage. Around 700 you deal about 80 percent of normal damage, and near 500 about half. Karma is hidden during a round, so you cannot use it to spot a traitor in the moment. After the round, a low-Karma player is a better hint than a single weird behaviour.
Common rules on TTT servers
| Rule | What it means |
|---|---|
| RDM (random deathmatch) | Do not kill without a reason. "I thought they were a traitor" is not a reason without evidence. |
| No ghosting | Dead players must not tell the living who the traitors are |
| No stalling | Do not hide to run out the clock |
| No mic spam | Keep the voice channel for the round |
| Staff decisions | Use the report command and wait for a response |
Picking a TTT server
- Choose a server with at least 12 or so players. Small servers make traitor rounds trivial.
- Look at the map name. Large maps need more players.
- Check that the server enforces the rules and has admins online.
- Look for a server that does not make you download a lot. See our join guide if the loading screen hangs.

A sample first round
Imagine you join a server with 16 players. In the preparing stage, grab a pistol and a rifle if the map has them, and note where other players go. When the round starts, check your role on screen. As an innocent, walk with one or two others and avoid dark corners. If someone dies near you, search the body and say what it shows in chat. If you are a traitor, stay calm, move with the crowd and pick off a lone player far from the others. After a few rounds you will notice patterns: who lies badly, who leads well, and which maps favor traitors. Do not worry about losing. Most players lose many early rounds, and the game is meant to be funny as well as tense.
Fixing common problems
Missing weapon models or purple textures are common because many TTT maps use content from other games. Follow our purple-black textures fix to mount the games you need.
A note for parents
Steam shows no official age rating for Garry's Mod. TTT is a shooting game where players are killed, and servers have open voice chat. Heated accusations are common. Younger players should use moderated servers, and voice chat can be turned off in the options.
