Rainbow Six Siege X is Ubisoft's tactical shooter. Matches are short rounds in small buildings, and one mistake can end a round. This guide explains the basics for new players, based on Ubisoft's description of the free version (checked on October 9, 2026).

Key takeaways

  • Two teams of five: attackers try to complete an objective, defenders try to stop them.
  • You pick an operator, a character with a special gadget, before each round.
  • The Free Access version includes Quick Match, Unranked and Dual Front.
  • Teamwork and calling out enemies matter more than aim.

How a round works

Each round has a prep phase and an action phase. Attackers send drones to scout the building. Defenders reinforce walls and set up traps and gadgets. Then the attackers go in. Defenders win by holding the objective or eliminating the attackers. Attackers win by completing the objective or eliminating the defenders. You play on a side for part of the match and then swap.

First steps

  1. Install the game and sign in with a Ubisoft account.
  2. Play the tutorial and the shooting range so you learn the controls.
  3. Queue Quick Match and pick a simple operator. Read the gadget description before the round.
  4. As a defender, watch one entry point and reinforce a wall near your objective.
  5. As an attacker, use your drone to find enemies before you enter a room.
  6. Talk: say where you saw an enemy and what you are doing.

Habits that help

  • Learn one map at a time instead of all of them.
  • Stay near a teammate so you can trade kills.
  • Check corners and ceilings; enemies can shoot through weak walls.
  • Use a headset only with people you trust, and mute anyone who is rude.

The game is rated for adults, so read our parents guide. To see how good players move, watch some streams below, then check the hub at Rainbow Six Siege X.
