GTA VI

GTA VI takes place in Leonida, a fictional state inspired by Florida, with Vice City at its heart. Rockstar's own page names only those two, but the Game Informer cover story and later coverage name more regions. This guide lists every place named so far and says who said it. Checked on October 10, 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Official setting: Vice City, USA, in the state of Leonida.
  • Six regions were reported from the Game Informer cover story: Vice City, Leonida Quays, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park.
  • The Leonida Keys appear in Rockstar's character text, where Jason worked for drug runners.
  • Real-world comparisons (Miami, the Everglades) are outlets' readings, not Rockstar statements.
  • No official map, kilometer size or fast-travel list has been published.

The big picture: Leonida

Rockstar describes Vice City as part of the state of Leonida and calls the setting the darkest side of the sunniest place in America. The state is fictional, but its name, climate and landmarks make the Florida link obvious. GameSpot's summary of the cover story says the map is about twice the size of GTA V's and Rockstar's largest world to date. Other pages quote a bigger comparison with Red Dead Redemption 2, but that figure is not confirmed. For more on size, read our map size guide.

Vice City and its districts

Vice City is where most players will spend their time. The Extended Look showed beaches, neon strips, traffic, nightclubs and a skyscraper that Lucia jumps from with a parachute. Starfish Island, a rich neighborhood from the older games, also appears in the trailers, according to GamesRadar. The city has deep roots: the 2002 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was set in the 1980s, and our Vice City history explains how the new version connects to it. Wikipedia also lists a Stockyard district inspired by Miami's Wynwood art scene, with murals by more than 50 street artists. Treat that as a reported detail rather than a Rockstar map label.

The wild side of Leonida

Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park cover the swamp and nature side of the state. GameSpot's summary says the game has over 170 animal species, about 60 of them birds, with alligators, manatees, flamingos, sharks and sea turtles named. Activities seen or confirmed around the water include fan boats, jet skis, kayaking, canoeing and scuba diving. For weather and wildlife, see weather and wildlife.

How to read location names in the news

Because Rockstar has shared so little, headlines often mix three different kinds of names. Some come from Rockstar itself, such as Vice City and Leonida. Some come from the website text and screenshot captions, such as Grassrivers and Mount Kalaga National Park. Others are nicknames that fans or outlets invented, such as "Little Haiti" or "Everglades zone". When you read a story, ask which group the name belongs to. If a map or location list says it is "confirmed" but cannot point to a Rockstar page, a trailer frame or a named magazine interview, it is a guess. The table above shows our own labels so you can tell the difference.

What you can do in each area

Rockstar has not matched activities to regions, but the footage gives hints. Water activities such as kayaking, airboating and jet-skiing fit the Quays, the Keys and Grassrivers. Off-road events are tied to Mount Kalaga by GameSpot. Gyms, billiards, mini-golf and a zoo visit have been listed as activities by outlets, though where they sit on the map is unknown. Base jumping was shown in Vice City. Use these as clues for planning your first week, not as a promise.

The Keys and the coast

Rockstar's character text says Jason worked for drug runners in the Leonida Keys, and the supporting cast includes Brian Heder, an old-school drug runner from the Keys who lets Jason live rent-free. The text places Heder at a boatyard. Whether you can drive all the way down the island chain is not confirmed. For these characters, see the supporting cast guide.

What is still missing

  • An official map. Fan maps online are guesses based on trailer frames and leaks.
  • Exact size in kilometers, and any list of towns.
  • Whether the game has fast travel, and how loading between areas works.
  • Whether all regions are open from the start.

In August 2026, an account posted footage and a map image that it said came from the game. Rockstar called the leaks painful for its team. We do not use leaked material here, because it can be wrong and is stolen work.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a fan map as official.
  • Mixing up Vice City (the city) with Leonida (the state).
  • Assuming Liberty City or other states are playable. Lucia comes from Liberty City, but the story is set in Leonida.
